What beard oil actually does

Beard oil is a lightweight blend of carrier oils, usually something like argan or jojoba, sometimes with a fragrance added. It absorbs into the skin underneath your beard as well as coating the hair itself. Its main job is to moisturise the skin and condition the hair, which is why it is the fix for itching, flaking, and that dry, straw-like texture facial hair can get. A few drops, worked in daily, is enough for most beards.

What beard balm actually does

Beard balm starts with the same kind of oils but adds beeswax and butters, like shea or cocoa, to the mix. That wax content is what makes the difference: balm is thicker, sits more on top of the hair than the oil does, and gives you a light hold. It tames flyaways, shapes the beard as it dries, and works well on longer beards that need some discipline to stay looking neat through the day.

Which one do you actually need

• Shorter beard, or just starting to grow one: beard oil. Your priority at this stage is skin comfort and conditioning, not hold.
• Longer beard that needs shaping: beard balm, or balm layered over oil. The wax gives you the hold to keep it looking deliberate rather than wild.
• Dry, flaky skin underneath: beard oil, applied more generously and worked right down to the skin, not just the hair.
• Want both moisture and hold: use both. Oil first, worked into the skin, then a small amount of balm over the top once the oil has settled in.
